Taiwo Awoniyi helped inspire Mainz to stage a late comeback in their 2-2 draw against FC Koln today

The striker, on loan from Liverpool, came off the bench with his side 2-0 down away from home.

Just minutes later he fired in his first goal for the club to halve the deficit.

And Mainz went on to equalise and earn a valuable point as they battle to avoid Bundesliga relegation.

Awoniyi, 22, has been on Liverpool’s books since the summer of 2015 when he was signed for £400,000 under Brendan Rodgers.

The Nigerian youth international immediately went out for a spell at FSV Frankfurt in a bid to help him secure a UK work permit.

And Reds fans would be forgiven for forgetting about him given he has had several stints with other sides since.

Most recently, he joined Jurgen Klopp’s former team Mainz on a season-long loan deal in August 2019.

Explaining the move, Awoniyi said:

“I went to Mainz because it was where Klopp started.

“He said ‘Taiwo you can go there and make it your home’. He said hopefully I would get my chance there and that maybe in the next one or two years the work permit is given I could come back.

“This past summer they had the best opportunity to sell me to another club permanently because they had a lot of clubs that showed interest in me.

“But then they said they were not selling because they said they don’t need to sell me and that I am an amazing talent that could still blossom. This was the reason they kept me.”
